July 8th 2011 21:45
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming on Friday, decided to retire. Yao's contract expired after this past season. He has only played five games the past two seasons. Yao standing at 7 ft. 6 in. was the tallest player in the NBA when he played. Though this height cost Yao in the end as he couldn't stay on the court.
Yao started playing in Shangai as a teenager. He won the Chinese Basketball Association championship with Shangai, in his fifth year there. After winning the title, Yao left China for USA and the NBA. He was drafted with the top-pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets.
He started almost immediately for the Rockets, a team in need of a center. Yao averaged 14 points and nine boards a rookie for Houston. His averages steadily rose until 2006 when he scored 25 points and nine rebounds. Yao in his last full year of playing, 2008 he averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds. Houston advanced to the second round for the first time since 1997 where they eventually fell to the Lakers.
Yao made it to eight NBA All-Star games. He made the All-NBA second team twice and All-NBA third team three times. Yao had great promise as a player in the NBA, but ultimately his career will be remembered for being injury prone. Yao only played two full seasons in the NBA. Just 2002, and 2003, every other year until his retirement was plaugued by injuries.
