Wild Finishes in early games of NFL Week
December 11th 2011 21:51
What a way to start of the day in the NFL. 5 games went down to the wire, with the team losing at the moment, getting a chance to win at the end. Only one of these teams came through. Houston beat Cincinnati, 20-19 in the final seconds of their game en route to winning the AFC East division and garnering a playoff berth, the first in franchise history.
Cincinnati was ahead most of the way, until the end. The Bengals were unable to convert a fourth and one play, giving the green light to TJ Yates and the Texans offense. A late pass interference penalty on Adam Jones assisted matters even further for Houston. Yates then finished the game with a six-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Walter. Thanks to Tennessee's loss to New Orleans, Houston clinched the division and improved to 10-3.
The Titans lost quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to a calf injury. Rookie quarterback Jake Locker came in and filled the spot. The Titans had a shot at winning the game in the final seconds, before Locker got sacked on third and goal as time expired. New Orleans held onto win the game, 22-17 pushing their record to 10-3, dropping the Titans to 7-6.
In another wild finish, Washington quarterback Rex Grossman drove the Redskins down the field in the waning minutes of their game against New England, only to throw an interception. Grossman lofted a weak pass to wideout Santana Holmes, and the ball bounced off the receivers hands into Patriots linebacker Jerret Mayo inside the five yard line. The Patriots won the game, 34-27, but will have to wait another week to clinch the division as the New York Jets beat Kansas City.
Two more wild finishes in the NFC, kept two teams alive for wild-card playoff berths. First Detroit beat Minnesota, 34-28 thanks to a late fumble by Vikings quarterback Joe Webb. The Vikings had all the momentum, starting a late drive from their own 20 yard line. Webb was looking impressive. Detroit had a bad penalty from defensive lineman Cliff Avril, pushing the Vikings to a first and goal inside the three-yard line. Then Webb was sacked by DeAndre Levy, and the ball came loose, with Detroit recovering it around midfield.
Finally, Atlanta rallied from a 23-7 deficit to Carolina, and won 31-23. The Falcons had to hold off Cam Newton and the Panthers in the final minutes to finish the job. They did just this, and Atlanta kept pace with New Orleans in the NFC South division.
