Why Aldridge deserves All-Star spot over Duncan
February 4th 2011 01:08
The NBA All-star game reserves were named on Thursday, by the respective coaches for each team. Professional all-star games, are mostly an waste of time for the hardcore sports fan, though for the players in the game, it means something. One major snub occurred when San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Poppovich named Tim Duncan an reserve and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge and Minnesota's Kevin Love were left out.
Rookie forward Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitski, Manu Ginoboli, Pau Gasol, Deron Williams, and Chris Paul got named along with Duncan. The Eastern Conference and head coach Doc Rivers played favorites by naming four Celtics to the team. Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, and Kevin Garnett, all made the team. Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson, and Al Horford join the four Celtics as reserves.
The four Celtics being named is kind of silly. Duncan and Gasol getting the nod over Aldridge and Love happens to be an travesty. The Spurs and the Lakers are the top- two teams in the West. Minnesota is last in the West, while Portland is eighth. Taking a closer look at the numbers brings the nonsense to light.
Duncan is having an terrible year. This is his worst by far for the long career, Duncan has enjoyed. He is still averaging nearly a double-double, with 14 points and nine rebounds. Gasol has a good year going with 18 points and 12 rebounds per game.
Aldridge has been on a tear this year, more so since Brandon Roy went down to injury. Aldridge scores 22 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers. He is coming off a career night versus the Spurs, scoring 40 points. Love has had a prolific season, averaging 21 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota. He has gone over forty points once this season, and thirty points, 11 times. His high on the season came versus Denver with 43 points in an 115-113 loss on December 18th.
Sure the Spurs and Lakers are the best in the West, but guys like Aldridge and Love deserved a spot over Duncan, and Gasol. Being named an All-Star for your respective sport is an great accomplishment. Both Love and Aldridge are young and will get a chance to be an All-Star later on. This year, at least one of them should of broken through and gotten the nod.
