West out for season
March 25th 2011 22:19
Yesterday, I wrote how it was three-way race for eighth place in the Western Conference. After today's bad news make it a four-way tie. New Orleans Hornets star forward David West was lost on Friday to a season-ending ACL injury. The injury occurred during the Hornets overtime win over Utah on Thursday night. West leads the Hornets with 19 points and eight rebounds. New Orleans is 41-31, on the year, one-half game ahead of Portland. The Blazers are hosting Western Conference leaders San Antonio tonight.
West is a huge part of the Hornets. Him and Chris Paul are the main go-to guys for New Orleans, without West, the Hornets are in trouble of making the playoffs. This is good news for Phoenix, Houston, and Memphis teams who are duking it out for a playoff spot. New Orleans has ten games left on the year, all but two of the opponents has a winning record, making their task even more daunting. Phoenix is the matchup tonight. Only Utah and Indiana remain with losing records.
Bringing in Carl Landry was huge for New Orleans. He was being brought off the bench, and starting occasionally since the deal. Landry's role will expand now to help out the Hornets who need a low post threat. Backup Jason Smith now will get more minutes. The Hornets are not at any postition but point guard with Chris Paul and Jarrett Jack.
Expect the Hornets to begin a slide beginning tonight. Winning four games with the remaining schedule will be considered a feat. New Orleans signed Patrick Ewing Jr. to fill out the roster after putting West on injured reserve.
