USC looking for leniency from NCAA

January 23rd 2011 02:27
Now's a great time for USC to ask the NCAA to have more lenient penalties towards them. After Auburn and Cam Newton got no penalty though the investigation is ongoing, and Ohio State football received an slim penalty.

USC as part of their violations received a stiff penalty last season from the NCAA, which they are now appealing. School President Max Nikias, athletic director Pat Haden and four other representives are in Indianapolis, hoping for the NCAA to reduce sanctions leveled at the football team. They accepted their men's basketball and women's tennis sanctions.

An two-year bowl ban, which began observation this season, USC officials would like to be over with. USC also wants the NCAA to reduce the scholarships being cut from 10 to five, for the next three seasons.

History of appeals may not be on USC's side, as ten appeals have been heard since 2008, only one has been deemed successful. But if you look at the Newton situation and the Ohio State football players being able to play the Sugar Bowl, something can happen. Five Ohio State players will only miss the first five games next season for trading memorabila in exchange for tattoos and other goods. They were able to play the Sugar Bowl where they beat Arkansas, 31-26.

The appeal process will take four to eight weeks. USC lost basketball coach Tim Floyd and football coach Pete Carroll before the sanctions were brought down. Both guys sensed something amiss and took the high road. Now USC officials want to regain some normalcy. If the NCAA wants to right some of their odd decisions over the year, they will accept the appeal.

The NCAA does make some weird decisions. However, they have a lot more information than what is given to the public, so it's hard to say sometimes. With the info we got, there is no reason the Ohio State players should have been in that Sugar Bowl.
