UConn coach set to take Maryland job

January 2nd 2011 23:17
Connecticut lost last night to Oklahoma, 48-20 in the Fiesta Bowl. The team played marginally well, as the game was still in contention going into the fourth quarter, when Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones turned it up another notch. The Huskies from Connecticut, made it quite a bit farther then anyone would of guessed, so giving Oklahoma a good game went a far way.

Connecticut coach Randy Edsall instead of flying back with the team and getting to work on next season, instead flew to Maryland, where he is expected to be named head coach of the team.

Maryland forced head coach Ralph Friedgen out of the position in December hoping for some young blood. Friedgen led the Terrapins to an 9-win season and a Military Bowl victory over East Carolina.

Edsall built Connecticut up from the ground up and thanks in large part to a weak Big East conference advanced to the BCS bowl game by winning the division. Edsall is 74-70 in 12 seasons at Connecticut. Edsall had a five year contract, he signed in 2008. A buyout will be in order for Edsall to make the change.

This is a very good hire for Maryland. To dump, Friedgen who was named ACC-Coach of the year, and hire Edsall who took UConn to the promised land is quite a feat. Locking him up this early, will enable the Terrapins to not miss a beat in recruiting.

Do not like this hire. Friedgen should have stayed.

Randy Esdall is a great coach in my opinion. I think he has done a great job at Connecticut, and the players really respect and love him. Esdall is a people's person, and that's why players like to play for him.

Someone, maybe it was on Orble, speculated that the Big East is nothing but a feeding ground for other schools. Win the BE, take the money and run. Look at Rich Rodriguez, Brian Kelly, and now Mr.Esdall.If the BE is ever to have any real legitimacy, this HAS to stop. Aside from that, I agree with Rick, Friedgen should have stuck around.
