March 8th 2011 04:34
As the Summitt and Sun Belt conference tournament championships are now set, the time has come to look at the games more in-depth.
Over in the Summitt conference, the two top seeds will face off for the third time this year. Oral Roberts as the second-seed is challenging the top-seed Oakland. The Oakland Golden Grizzlies cruised through the regular season and tournament thus far. They beat Oral Roberts both times the two teams faced off this year, in two closely fought games. Oakland only suffered one loss in conference play this year to IUPUI, who lost to Oral Roberts in the other semifinal. Oakland played a wide variety of non-conference teams en route to a 24-9 record. Purdue, West Virginia, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio State all defeated the Golden Grizzlies this year. Oakland beat Tennessee while they were in the top-25.
A classic inside-outside combo of Keith Benson who averages 17 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks per game, and guard Reggie Hamilton key Oakland. Hamilton averages 17 points, and five assists. Benson averaged 20 points against Oral Roberts this year.
Oral Roberts is 18-14 on the year, and 13-5 in conference play. They are lead by Dominque Morrison who scores 19 points and five boards per game. He had huge games versus the Golden Bears averaging 28 points. He will need another big game tomorrow for the Golden Eagles to win.
Oakland is in trouble based upon how all the other tournament finals are panning out with the favorite struggling. Benson has the abilty to dominate a game. Still going with an upset here. Oral Roberts with the win.
The Sun Belt conference pits North Texas versus Arkansas Little-Rock who pulled off a minor upset of Middle Tennessee State. The fourth and fifth seeded teams as the top four all went down to defeat. North Texas defeated top-seeded Florida Atlantic in one quarterfinal. The Trojans of Arkansas Little-Rock are 18-16 on the year. They dropped both games to North Texas this year. North Texas won this tourney last year, and once again they are odds-on favorite to do so. Though the favorites have struggled this year.
The Mean Green of North Texas score lots of points, averaging 77 per game. Tristan Thompson leads the team with 18 per game. George Odufuwa chips in with 11 points and 11 boards per game.
The Trojans are led by Solomon Bozeman who scores 16 points. He averaged 16 versus the Mean Green. The Trojans are lucky to get this far. They gave the Mean Green a great game the last time they played, losing by just two. The Trojans held Thompson to only nine points in the close loss.
North Texas is the better team of these two teams. At 22-10 on the year, and a .500 mark in conference play, they are the better team. North Texas repeats as Sun Belt champion. No upset here.
