Tristan Thompson Player Profile
June 12th 2011 23:27
The Detroit Pistons hold the eighth pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. This Detroit team is no longer a threat in the East like they were in the late 80's, 90's and early 2000 years. The core is aging quickly and the time is here to get younger. I project Detroit selects power forward Tristan Thompson from Texas. The Pistons need guard help but Thompson is the best player available. Therefore maybe a trade up can be possible to grab Brandon Knight, Kyrie Irving or Kemba Walker. If not Detroit would be wise to trade down.
Thompson was born in Ontario, Canada, where he began his high school playing days. The forward moved to New Jersey to play for a prep school after driving up from Canada. Thompson played at Saint Benedict's Prepatory School in Newark for famous high school coach Dan Hurley. The coach and Thompson had issues together, making a change likely. Thompson left to play for Findlay Prep after one and a half seasons at Saint Benedicts. He was named to numerous All-American teams after one season at Findlay. Thompson led Findlay to a record of 32-2 as a senior. He averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. Thompson committed to play for Rick Barnes at Texas.
While at Texas, Thompson began to add more muscle to his 6ft. 8 in. frame. Thompson started 34 of 36 games last season for the Longhorns as a freshman. He averaged 13 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks per game. Texas advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament where they ran into Derrick Williams and Arizona. The Wildcats knocked Texas out of the tourney due to Williams making huge plays down the stretch. Instead of returning for his sophomore season, Thompson signed an agent to enter the NBA Draft.
Thompson is very young still after only playing one season of college ball. He has great potential to be something special in the NBA. Detroit has a plethora of young power forwards and centers in Jason Maxiell, Chris Wilcox, Charlie Villanueva, and Greg Monroe. Adding Thompson to this mix would almost signal Detroit is ready to make even more moves. Thompson flourished under the guidance of Rick Barnes now the forward who clashed with Hurley gets another chance with someone new. The Pistons are without a coach right now after firing John Kuester.
