Tragic Story of Len Bias

September 9th 2011 04:02
At the 1986 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics who traded up to the second pick in the draft, picked Len Bias. Brad Daugherty was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first pick. Boston had just won the NBA title, less then a month before. Two days after this moment, Bias died from cardiac arrhythmia from a cocaine overdose. Bias was only 22 years old. He is considered one of the best players, never to make it to the NBA.

Bias at Maryland made quite a name for himself. He was known as a dynamic player, one who outshined everyone else on the court. As a senior, Bias was named All-American, averaging 23 points and seven rebounds. Overall, at Maryland, he averaged 16 points and won the ACC Player of the Year twice.

What was overlooked by many was Bias's drug problem. He was seen entering and leaving a known drug area in Boston, just one day after getting drafted. Hours later he was unconscious, later dying.

After his death, Bias was found to be 21 credits short of graduating Maryland. His coach, Lefty Dresell had masked this drug problem from onlookers. He knew Bias and teammates were using drugs. He later resigned.

It is sad looking at all the websites on the internet, predicting how Bias could of been as a NBA player. Because of some bad judgement calls, nobody got the pleasure of seeing him in Celtic green other then the photo with his hat on. Many compared him to Michael Jordan, but in the end nobody knows just how good he could of been.

I blame it on a poor education system at high school and college, and I also think that he was the subject of poor parenting. In any case, Bias screwed himself over because he had a choice. All the same, it is a touching story that tells us just how fragile somebody's life can be. One mistake can completely shatter what could have been a great career, but let's not forget that this would have caught up to him as a player. Maybe he wouldn't have ended up being great, but the fact that he died is what makes this tragic. I think Len Bias's story shows us the importance of educating our youth about drugs. Forget "Just Say No", and focus on what happens to people who use drugs, such as Len Bias.

Wait a minute. I grew up in Maryland at that time. Bias and I are around the same age. I have many friends who went to high school and college with him. Well educated people I might add. I'm sorry Joe, but Bias did not receive bad parenting. His mother and father raised him very well. In fact the last thing his father said before Bias went out that fateful night was 'Be careful'. He just made a very bad decision on his own. At that time drugs were rampant in the D.C. metro area and cocaine was one of the biggest. And hell it wasn't just Maryland. I I went to Jacksonville, FL University at that time, a private mostly white school and cocaine was rampant there too. One of the guys in my dorm paid his tuition by dealing it.
No the story of Len Bias is exactly what was written here. Bad judgement. Nothing else.
