Tournament 2nd Round Update
March 18th 2011 00:06
With the four play-in games the previous two days, today's and tomorrow's action is considered the 2nd round.
Great games all around thus far, close games and last second finishes, plus a couple of upsets. The first upset was Morehead State knocking off Louisville. I felt the Cardinals of Louisville was going to have issues with Morehead State, but would win a close game. Everything was going to plan until the game began and Louisville couldn't make anything. Morehead state was ahead 7-0, and you could tell something was going to happen later. Louisville battled back and was ahead 61-57, with little more then a minute remaining. Then the Eagles from Morehead State got a little luck after a field goal, cutting the lead to two points, Demonte Harper got the ball. The guard from Nashville, Tennessee, calmly drained a three-pointer, putting the Eagles ahead by one. Louisville couldn't do anything in the final seconds, and the first upset happened. The Eagles won with their best player Kenneth Faried shooting just 4-17 from the field.
A minor upset then occurred with Richmond upending Vanderbilt, 69-66. I expected the Spiders to win here and they did. Richmond improved to 28-7 on the year, sending Vanderbilt home again with the first round defeat. Kevin Anderson scored 25 points in the win for Richmond.
Everything else has been by the books with the team who was expected to win, doing just that. Temple, Butler, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Butler, and San Diego State all won their games. Five of the first eight games all went down to the wire, with the victor winning by three or less points. West Virginia won by eight, Pittsburgh by 23, and San Diego State defeated Northern Colorado by 17.
Look for Belmont to give Wisconsin all they can handle in the afternoon game. The later games all should be good as the higher seeds all can win. More upsets and madness are yet to occur tonight.
