Time for Chris Johnson to report to camp

August 15th 2011 23:05
Tennesse Titans running back Chris Johnson is still sitting out of training camp. He wants more money. Tennessee is willing to make Johnson the highest paid running back in the NFL, but it seems he wants more.

Johnson's advisors are saying he wants to be paid amongst the top play-makers. He as a running back makes plays, but does Johnson deserve the type of money he wants? One word: no. The top running backs? Yes.
Chris Johnson needs to report to the Titans

Looking at fellow running backs contracts, Johnson wouldn't get much more of an increase in salary if he was to be paid the most. Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings gets paid $10.7 million. Johnson with his current contract would get paid $2.7 million if the deal gets maxed out, with just $800,000 dollars in base salary. Actually it seems if Johnson does in fact get to be the top paid running back in the league, his deal would increase by $8 million dollars. Obviously he wouldn't get paid this for the upcoming season but for every season subsequently he would.

Johnson has rushed for nearly 4,600 yards and 34 touchdowns in three seasons in the league. He has 137 receptions out of the backfield. He is the Titans best player. Now Tennessee upgraded their quarterback spot by adding Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker. Time for Johnson to show up, so he and management can get down to business on working on a contract. Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt says the team will not get started on a contract until Johnson reports. Well, the time is now as this charade is making you and the rest of the team look bad.

$2.7 mill is over the last 2 years of his contract. This season tops at a little over $1 million.
I think CJ feels like he can't trust the Titans front office, after they enticed him last year by giving him a bump from $550,000 to $2.05 million to show up to camp then told him they would take care of him this year.
They did the same for Finnegan, and he was so insulted by their "taking care of him" deal that he stormed out of camp.
The Titans have no one but themselves to blame for this holdout. They need to get a deal done so he can get acclimated to his new coaches & quarterbacks.
