Thursday Nights Opener in the NFL

September 7th 2011 01:29
Amidst all the lights and splendor of the NFL kickoff celebration, the defending national champs are set to face champions from two years ago on Thursday night. The Green Bay Packers host the New Orleans Saints in this year's opener in the NFL.

Maroon 5, Lady Antellebellum, and Kid Rock are all slated to perform before the game on Thursday. Barack Obama has a speech scheduled for sometime before the kickoff. Then Al Michaels and Cris Collingsworth take over.

New Orleans is no stranger to starting the season on the opening night. They have played in the first game three of the past five seasons. Just last year, the Saints beat the Minnesota Vikings. Now another NFC North team steps up.

The Green Bay Packers came out of nowhere to win the Super Bowl last year. They won 10 games during the regular season, and then rode the hot hand of quarterback Aaron Rodgers all the way to end. The Packers didn't lose too much from last season's team, and many experts are picking them to win it all again. If Rodgers continues lighting up opposing teams defenses then anythings possible.

Drew Brees leads the Saints onto the field. He threw for another 33 touchdown passes last year. This is three straight years of tossing for at least 33 touchdowns. The Saints traded Reggie Bush to the Miami Dolphins, but signed Darren Sproles from the San Diego Chargers to take over his spot. Adding Mark Ingram to the mix which already included Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas always helps.

A weak spot in the Saints attack last year was the defense. Giving up that touchdown run to Marshawn Lynch in the playoffs hurts. New Orleans added Aubrayo Franklin to the defensive line to shore question marks. Tackling machines Jonathan Vilma and Roman Harper return.

Green Bay lost Nick Barnett and Cullen Jenkins to free agency. They return everyone else from a defensive unit which was strong throughout the season. Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji are stars on the team. Charles Woodson is looking to hang on, but this might be his final season.

Green Bay will win a close game over the Saints. Look for both teams to play great, and the game to go down to the wire. Rodgers outplays Brees en route to the win. The Saints defense still needs work, and this game shows. Brees and a great running game do their part, but they can't do it all.

Nice preview man, I hope you check out mine. I have the Packers winning as well, but I think you are too generous with your evaluation of the Saints running game. I honesty think that Mark Ingram was a reach, and that Chris Ivory needs to get some carries. He is a very efficient back who is underrated, and Pierre Thomas is a pretty good, versatile back. Ingram isn't a bad player per se, but trading up for a running back in the first round isn't ideal. All of this will be shoved in my face if Ingram turns into a star, but my initial impressions- that is, before Ingram's first start- say that it wasn't such a good draft deal.
