Here is a look at a shot which propelled Michael Jordan to a superstar. The Shot occurred on May 7, 1989, in game five of a best of five series between the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Chicago at the time was considered a one-man team with Jordan leading the way. He was known as a great scorer in the league, but the rest of the Bulls have yet to come around. Chicago was the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and Cleveland held the third seed. The Cavaliers defeated Chicago all six times the teams met during the regular season. Cleveland on the year was 57-25 and Chicago stood ten games back at 47-35.
Chicago took game one of the series at Cleveland, 95-88, thanks to an injury to the home teams starting point guard, Mark Price. The Cavs took game two, 96-88. Then the two teams split the two games at Chicago, with the Bulls winning game three, 101-94, and Cleveland winning game four by three points despite 50 points from Jordan.
Game five was set to take place at Cleveland. The game went back and forth for most of the contest. Jordan hit a jumper with just over six seconds left, giving the Bulls a 99-98 lead. Then Craig Ehlo took the ball to the hole, and got a basket, giving Cleveland a one-point lead with three seconds left.
At the end, Jordan with the Bulls behind one point, took the ball starting from the right side and then moved towards the key. A flailing Ehlo, attempted to block the shot, but Jordan hanging in mid-air let the ball go as Ehlo's chance vanished. The shot went directly into the net for a perfect swish. Chicago earned the win, Jordan became a star in the league, and the rest is history. Chicago went onto win five titles with Jordan leading the way.
