April 10th 2011 16:04
The Portsmouth Invitational is one of two opportunities for NBA Draft prospects to show of their skills for the scouts to see. Many of the prospects cancelled though for this three-day meeting. But those who did show up, put on a show for scouts and others to see. Here's a list of the best performances:
Jimmy Butler from Marquette: Averaged a little over 18 points and was named tournament MVP. His game is compared to former Marquette and current Portland Trailblazer Wesley Matthews.
Gilbert Brown from Pittsburgh: Put on a show on day two, scoring 19 points. Showed skills as a defender in addition to the scoring.
Alex Tyus from Florida: The big-man continued his assualt on opposing teams, with 15 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in game two of the meeting. Tyus had a great NCAA tournament, and is proving he is worthy of a pick.
John Holland from Boston University: The guard who played well against Kansas in the NCAA tournament, had a great invitational. He scored 23 points, and showed his slashing skills to the basket.
Andrew Guodelock from College of Charleston: This guy can shoot the ball. He knocked down five 3-pointers in scoring 19 points. Has the talent to make every shot he attempts. Knocked down another seven 3-pointers in day three en route to 26 points.
Malcom Thomas from San Diego State: An efficient big-man over the three-day tourney. Scored 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block in game three.
Games today: Mentioned these in Friday's blog, will update this here.
Chicago at Orlando: Kicks of the day's action. Possible second round matchup pits the Bulls strong lineup against the Magic's strong lineup. Both teams have depth, can score, and defend. The Bulls already locked into first place, may begin to rest starters.
Boston at Miami: Round four with the second seed in the East on the line. The Heat have the advantage with home-court, and the team appears to be playing better. Boston needs to get back on track, here's a perfect game to do just this.
Detroit at Charlotte: Who cares about this game? Both teams are playing for draft postition.
New Jersey at Toronto: Another game with teams playing for draft position.
New Orleans at Memphis: Portland has an half-game advantage on the Hornets right now for sixth in the West. The Grizzlies have an outside shot at seventh or sixth even. Whoever wins grabs control of their own destiny.
New York Knicks at Indiana: The Knicks have a slim half-game lead over Philadelphia for sixth in the East. The Pacers are locked into a first round matchup with Chicago.
Phoenix at Dallas: This game doesn't mean much, though Dallas does need a win to stay ahead of Oklahoma City who is hot on their tracks. The Mavericks hold a one-game lead on the Thunder. Phoenix is playing for the draft.
