The "Big- O" as he is commonly known could do it all on the basketball court. Oscar Robertson standing at 6 ft. 5 in. was way before his time in the NBA. Robertson for the year of 1960-61 was the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double. For his career, Robertson had 181 triple-doubles.
A triple-double is when a player posts double-figure totals in three of five statistical categories. As a rookie, the "Big-O" averaged 30.3 points per game. But nobody would of expected his second season. Robertson averaged 31 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists per game for the Cincina ti Royals. He posted 41 triple-doubles during the season and broke the NBA record for assists in a season, topping Bob Cousy's mark of 715 by 184.
The next two years for Robertson were more of the same. He nearly averaged triple-double's for Cincinnati. In fact, when you average out Robertson's first five years in the NBA, a triple-double is found. 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists are his phenonomenal numbers. He won the NBA's MVP award in 1964 in leading Cincinnati to the Eastern Conference Finals where they lost to Boston. Yet Robertson never got much credit, and was traded to Milwaukee in 1970.
While at Milwaukee, Robertson teamed with Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) to win the 1970 NBA title. The Bucks made the Finals one more time before Robertson retired in 1974.
It will be difficult for any future NBA player to reach, Robertson's 181 career triple-doubles. Robertson for his career in the NBA, averaged 26 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. Amazing numbers for the big guard. He was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and remains active in the University of Cinncinati basketball, where he played in college.
