Surprises at the NBA All-Star break
February 18th 2011 23:52
Surprising teams:
San Antonio: The Spurs were predicted to have a great year, but nobody would of thought this. A 46-10 record, easily the best in the league is a big surprise. San Antonio just had their streak of the same starting five broke when Head Coach Gregg Poppovich benched Manu Ginoboli in favor of George Hill. Tim Duncan is having a down season, and the Spurs are still first in the league? This is a testament of Poppovich and the team not having any serious injury.
Portland/New Orleans: Both teams are surprises for how much adversity they have gone through, and yet are winning. Portland is 32-24 on the year, and riding a six-game winning streak into the break. This is without center Greg Oden who is lost for the season. Marcus Camby and Brandon Roy have both missed multiple games. But the team is winning and surprising many. New Orleans brought in Monty Williams, a former assistant with the Blazers to take over the reins. Him and guard Chris Paul fueled a great start for the team winning their first eight games of the year. A slump going into the break has the Hornets losing nine of 12, and are now 33-25.
Philadelphia: Doug Collins, former NBA coach and tv analyst has a group of guys in Philadelphia buying into his system. The 76ers are 27-29 on the year, and sitting in the seventh spot in the East. A balanced scoring group headed by Elton Brand, and Andre Igouldala make the 76ers a surprise team.
Surprising players:
Amare Stoudemire: The forward/center has ignited the New York Knicks to a 28-26 record. Everyone knew Stoudemire had skills, but this year has been a surprise. After escaping the shadow of guards Steve Nash, and Jason Richardson, Stoudemire has greatly increased his scoring output per game. Coming into the year he averaged 21 points, as a Knick this number went up five points. Stoudemire is tied with Lebron James for second in the league in scoring behind Kevin Durant.
Blake Griffin: The rookie who took last season off with injury, has made the Los Angeles Clippers a threat once again. The forward made the all-star team, and is favored to take the slam dunk contest. He is averaging 23 points and 13 boards per game for the Clippers who are 21-35 on the year.
Kevin Love: Another first entry for the all-star game, Love's numbers are astounding. Averaging 21 points and 16 rebounds, plus a streak of double-doubles make this player from Lake Oswego, Oregon a surprise. Minnesota, is a terribile 13-43, hurting Love's chances at any recognition.
