Sunday's championship games previews
March 13th 2011 00:20
Four finals are set for tomorrow. The Atlantic 10, SEC, Big 10, and ACC. Afterwards the brackets will be finalized for the NCAA tournament.
Richmond and Dayton face off for the Atlantic 10 crown. The Spiders of Richmond played their way into the NCAA tournament by knocking off Temple on Saturday. Dayton needs to win here for a berth. The Flyers are 22-12 on the year, and Richmond is 26-7. The Spiders defeated Dayton in their lone matchup this year.
Richmond is led by Kevin Anderson and Justin Harper. Both guys make the Spiders go, with Anderson averaging 17 points and three assists. Harper leads the team with 18 points, and seven boards. The Spiders have won 13 out of their last 15 games.
Dayton is a surprise team, after outlasting top-seeded Xavier on Friday, they dispatched of St.Josephs on Saturday. The Flyers finished tied for seventh in the Atlantic 10. They had a season of ups and downs, though can now punch their ticket. Chris Wright increased his scoring average from 13 points to 22 in the Flyers loss to Richmond. Chris Johnson, the other forward for the Flyers averages 12 points.
Richmond has playing so well, it is difficult to go against them. Dayton has had issues throughout the year, though now seem to be on the right track. Richmond wins the game here.
SEC: Florida and Kentucky renew their rivalry once again. The teams split their season series with both clubs defending the homecourt. Florida is 26-6 on the year, and Kentucky is 24-8.
The Gators forward Jim Parsons in both outings had his best games versus Kentucky of the year. The forward went for a double-double in the Gators win over Kentucky, with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He leads the team in assists averaging about four. Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker , the starting backcourt lead the Gators in scoring. The two combine for 29 points.
Kentucky is lead by two freshman, Brandin Knight and Terrance Jones. Knight is tops on the team in scoring with 17 points, while Jones goes for 16. The Wildcats are on a five-game winning streak heading into Sunday's outing. Florida, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Alabama all went down to the Wildcats during this late season run.
This game will probably be the best of the four games on Sunday. Both teams are nearly mirror images. Going with Kentucky due to their late season run here. Will be a tight game.
ACC: North Carolina and Duke, the old Tobacco Road rivalry meet up again. The Tar Heels once again rebounded from a slow start versus Clemson to gain another win, behind Harrison Barnes 40 points. Duke guard Nolan Smith was doubtful for today's game with Virginia Tech. He played and scored 27 points. The two teams split their season series, each winning at home.
Duke is 29-4 on the year after Saturday's win. Kyle Singler and Smith lead the way. Singler had problems against the Tar Heels physical play both games. Smith stepped up the first game, going off for 34 points.
North Carolina is 27-6 this season, after another win. They surprised the Blue Devils by winning the regular season crown, now can win the tournament also. Barnes and Tyler Zeller lead the way for the Heels who have won 19 out of 21 games. Zeller has whipped Singular around this year both games.
The Tar Heels win again here and gain a number-one seed in the NCAA tournament. Duke falls to a number two seed.
Big 10: Penn State faces off with Ohio State. The Buckeyes won the regular season and swept the Nittany Lions, winning a tight game in Columbus. The last matchup with the two was a blowout as Ohio State easily won. Penn State knocked off fellow bubble team Michigan State on Saturday, while the Buckeyes beat Michigan.
Penn State is 19-13 on the year after beating the Spartans. They remain on the bubble, likely needing a win here. Taylor Battle and Tim Frazier are a good one-two punch, who scored 47 of the Nittany Lions points against Michigan State. Battle pulled his name out of the NBA Draft last year to come back for a chance at the NCAA tournament. Now's his chance.
Ohio State is led by Jared Sullinger, David Lighty, and William Buford. The Buckeyes are a lock for a number one seed even if they lose here. Ohio State is 31-2 on the year, and ranked number one.
I'm going for the upset here, Penn State to gain a shot at the tournament must win. The game will go down to the end, with Penn State and Battle gaining the berth.

Duke and UNC what else do I have to say.
Just like you said Dayton needs a win but that might be tough with how well Richmond is playing right now.
PSU is really going to have their hands full can they pull off the upset? I am from PA so I am a homer here hoping that the Nittany Lions can get their shot at the NCAA tournament. I know alot of guys who went to PSU so i hear about them alot.
I do think that Florida and Kentucky game is going to come down to the wire. These two teams are evenly matched and do not like each other so this should be a great dog fight.
Good Stuff man!
