Strange story of Dave Duerson
February 21st 2011 04:36
Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson committed suicide on Thursday by shooting himself in the chest. He was just 50 years old. Just before doing this, Duerson sent text messages to his family members about how his brain needed examined. Duerson believed he had a condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This condition is believed to have haunted more then a dozen deceased NFL players.
Duerson's brain is being donated to the University of Boston's medical school. Boston University is expected to look at the brain and pinpoint what this disease does to the brain.
Duerson was a third-round pick out of Notre Dame in 1983. He played 11 seasons in the NFL, winning Championships with the 1985 Bears and 1990 New York Giants. Duerson was selected to four Pro Bowls during his career. Arizona Cardnials safety Adrian Wilson broke Duerson's record of seven sacks from a defensive back in 1986.
After football the former safety owned a chain of McDonalds and was a member of a panel who weighed former players claims.
Duerson's death hopefully can open the eyes of the NFL and the medical world with the dangers of this disease. New advances in helmet safety can keep these problems from happening in the future. Its sad for guys like Duerson who have to deal with issues like this.
