Stojakovic likely next destination: Dallas
January 22nd 2011 00:23
This week Toronto bought out the contract of forward Peja Stojakovic, setting the tone for teams to line up and snag the veteran. Dallas is the leading canidate for his services. Something needs to be settled first.
Dallas and Toronto are working on a trade which would send center Alexis Ajinca to the Raptors. This trade would create a roster spot which would be used to sign Stojakovic.
Complications have arised along the way, most notable is the deal for Ajinca salary-cap complaint. The NBA can knock down the trade, forcing Dallas to release someone and then sign Stojakovic, who can't wait to sign with the Mavs.
Bringing in Peja would help the Mavericks who have struggled since losing forward Caron Butler to season-ending injury, and Dirk Nowitski to his injury problems. Nowitski has since returned and has played the last two games for Dallas.
Stojakovic, an native Serbian, has enjoyed a 12-year NBA career. His first seven seasons were spent with Sacramento, where he teamed with Chris Webber and Mike Bibby to make the Kings one of the best teams in the league at the time. His average of 24.2 points per game in the 2003-04 campaign rates as his finest scoring output. He returned to Sacramento after a short stint at Indiana, for part of the 2005 season. Then four seasons with the New Orleans Hornets, before finally the Raptors this season. His scoring per game totals has decreased each season since the 2003 season, but his leadership would be valuable for Dallas come playoff time.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Hornets are Stojakovic's two other teams he would like to sign with.
