Southwest and East regional finals
March 27th 2011 00:28
Butler did it again. The Bulldogs defeated Florida in the Southwest regional final. Now the West regional final is at halftime with Arizona and Connecticut facing off. Two more games will be played tomorrow in the East region, North Carolina and Kentucky take the court. Over in the Southeast, VCU faces off with Kansas.
VCU versus Kansas: Is VCU this years Butler? Hard to say, as the Rams had something to prove in the tournament after many questioned their selection. Butler on the other hand was an automatic selection to the tournament after winning their conference tournament. Kansas has blitzed their opponents in the tournament so far. Easily dispatching Richmond, Illinois and having a little trouble with Boston in the first round before pulling away. Kansas is looking to become the fifth team in NCAA history to make the final four without playing a team higher then ninth-seed.
VCU with Jamie Skeen in the middle and four good guards cause matchup problems for opposing teams. Now they play Kansas, a team who will cause problems with their good forwards up front. The Morris brothers, Martieff, and Marcus are too imposing for VCU up front. Skeen can hold his own against either Morris brother, but the other one will be left to run wild. Kansas can match VCU's guards with Tyshon Thomas, and Brady Morningstar leading the way.
Kansas blew out Richmond, didn't have any problem with Illinois, but the 16th-seeded Boston University played them well for 30 minutes. Kansas had too much firepower for the Terriers in the end. VCU keeps the game within ten points, but falls in the final minutes to the Jayhawks.
Kentucky versus North Carolina: Who would of expected these two teams to match up in this region? Nobody since Ohio State was in your region. The Buckeyes all year long looked like the best team in the country. Though Kentucky had the last laugh on Friday as Brandon Knight knocked down a huge shot in the final seconds of the game. North Carolina blew out Marquette, helping those who were stuck in Friday afternoon traffic not worry about missing a good game. Kansas was against Richmond in the other early Friday game, thus both were good to miss.
Kentucky starts three freshman. All three are huge to the team's success. Doron Lamb, Terrance Jones, and Knight all need to score for the Wildcats to win. Jones may get all the accolades as the teams leading scorer but Knight is the teams best player. Josh Harrleson came up with a great perfomance against Jared Sullinger, helping the Wildcats earn the victory on Friday. Harrelson now gets to face Tyler Zeller.
North Carolina has a super freshman of their own in Harrison Barnes. Zeller is the teams best player. He showed this in the win over Marquette, scoring 26 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Barnes contributed with 20 points.
Jones versus Barnes. Knight versus Kendall Marshall. Harrleson versus Zeller. Whoever wins two of these matchups wins Sunday's game. Zeller has yet to be tested in the tournament. He has been able to do whatever he wants to do. Harrleson will put an end to this. Knight wins the point guard battle, leaving the small forward position as the key matchup. Jones versus Barnes. Two of the top ten recruits in the nation duking it out for supremacy. Both are expected to take their talent to the NBA after this season, but first a game with the final four on the line. Neither team plays much of their bench, so if fouls become a problem look for a team to take charge. Kentucky wins a tight game in the final minute again , and continues dancing.
