Saturday's Pre-season openers in the NFL
August 12th 2011 22:53
Green Bay at Cleveland: The defending Super Bowl champions get down to business versus the Browns. Green Bay stayed about the same as they were last season, not really adding anyone and losing a few key players including Cullen Jenkins on the defensive line. Cleveland will look to continue improvement which was seen last season in the quarterback position with Colt McCoy. Running back Peyton Hillis will look to stay off the injury list after getting the Madden cover for the year. Players on the cover have a history of getting injured.
Minnesota at Tennessee: Both teams made significant changes at quarterback with Donovan McNabb and rookie Christian Ponder at Minnesota. Tennessee has a trio of new quarterbacks in Jake Locker, Matt Hasselbeck and Matt Leinart. The Titans will be missing running back Chris Johnson who is nearing an end to his contract dispute. New head coaches finally get their chance to lead in this game. Mike Munchak at Tennessee earned his chance in the spotlight. Leslie Frazier was the interim coach last season after Brad Childress was let go. The interim label was taken off during the off-season.
Indianapolis at St. Louis: The Colts won't have the services of franchise quarterback Peyton Manning as he continues to heal. Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky will fight for the backup spot in this game to Manning once he gets back. St. Louis blew a chance at a playoff game last year by losing to Seattle in the season-finale. Now Sam Bradford returns for the Rams. An improved defense led by rookie defensive end Robert Quinn who makes his debut.
NY Giants at Carolina: Cam Newton makes his debut for the Panthers as does new head coach Ron Rivera. The Panthers retained many of their key free agents including defensive end Charles Johnson and running back DeAngelo Williams. New York begins the year with many questions on both sides of the ball. Who will Eli Manning have to throw the ball too? Steve Smith has jumped sides to Philadelphia. Kevin Boss is a free agent. Usi Umenioyara wants out and demanded a trade. His trade request was initially ok'd but now Usi is told to show up to camp.
Buffalo at Chicago: An interesting game on paper. I like what both teams did in the off-season to improve themselves. Adding Marion Barber and Roy Williams to the Bears offense improves their ability to move the ball. Especially if Williams rebounds after a disapointing stay at Dallas. With Barber and Matt Forte running the ball for the Bears, things should open up more for Jay Cutler. Losing Greg Olson to a trade was tough, but Desmond Clark returns. The Bills brought in a proven tackler in Nick Barnett from Green Bay. Adding him to the defense instantly bolsters the Bills. Ryan Fitzpatrick returns as the quarterback. Buffalo traded Lee Evans today to the Ravens for a fourth-round pick. Don't really care for that move, but Evans wanted out.
