Saturdays College Bowl Games

December 16th 2010 01:49

New Mexico Bowl: Brigham Young (BYU) vs University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP)
A battle of 6-6 teams sees BYU enter as an 12 point favorite. Both teams are formerly of the old WAC conference before BYU jumped to the Mountain West and UTEP went to the Conference USA. Both coaches Mike Price of UTEP and Bronco Mendenhall of BYU have been to bowl games on many occasions. In fact this will be the first season BYU has not posted ten wins since 2005. BYU can beat you through the air or on the ground. With quarterback Jake Heaps and running back JJ di Luigi as the main stars of the attack. UTEP doesn’t have the defense to contain them. The Cougars began the year 1-5 but won five of final six, only loss by one point to Utah. They will win number seven.

Humanitarian Bowl: Northern Illinois vs Fresno State
Both teams have had good seasons this year for the most part. Northern Illinois (11-2) was one play away from winning the Mid-American Conference (MAC) but couldn’t seal the deal versus Miami of Ohio. Fresno State (8-4) has been up and down this year, but finished on a high note with a close win over Illinois, 25-23. Fresno State coach Pat Hill knows the famed blue field in Boise, Idaho where the game will be held as well as anyone. Fresno State traveled to Boise this season and lost 51-0. This game will be much closer then the earlier trip. The Bulldogs from Fresno have an balanced attack with Ryan Colbourn accounting for 21 touchdowns in the air and running back Robbie Rouse rushing for almost 1100 yards this season. Don’t count out Northern Illinois and their rushing attack. Chad Spann’s 20 touchdowns and 1300 yards rushing will keep Fresno State defense entertained for the game. Look for a great game, with the bigger Fresno team wearing down Northern Illinois along the way and earning the win.

New Orleans Bowl: Troy vs Ohio
Ohio (8-4) goes into this game as one of the hottest teams in the country minus their season finale loss to Kent State, 28-6. Ohio won seven straight games after losing three out of their first four. Troy (7-5) has had a season full of ups and downs. Losing only 41-38 to Oklahoma State is one of the highlights from the season. An 69-24 loss to South Carolina, shows the other side to the team. A weak defense is aided by a strong passing game with quarterback Corey Robinson. Robinson has 24 touchdowns on the season and is averaging 276 yards a game. Ohio beat Mid-American champion Miami of Ohio 34-13 in a key divisional matchup. The loss to Kent State stings costing them a chance at the conference title. Ohio wins with their defense. This game will be strength vs. strength. Ohio will not put a ton of points on the board, if Troy and Robinson get going then watch out. Look for a low scoring game with Ohio asking quarterback Boo Jackson not to lose the game and manage it well. Ohio wins.

I actually want to see the Troy and Ohio game. I do have Ohio in it too, but it should be an interesting one to watch.
