March 12th 2011 01:16
As the Southland, Mid-Eastern, Southwestern Atlantic, Mid-American, American East,Conference USA, Big-12, Big East, Pac-10, Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences all hold their championships on Saturday, I will break these games down into two or more posts. Here's a look at the Southland to start things off.
McNeese State and Texas San-Antonio are set to square off for the automatic berth. The Cowboys of McNeese State won the regular season crown, finishing the season at 21-10 overall. They cruised through the first two rounds thus far. Texas San-Antonio are a big surprise as they finished seventh in conference play. The Roadrunners are 18-13 on the season.
The teams met once thus far this year. The Roadrunners won the game, 65-61. Texas San-Antonio have rebounded after an early five-game losing streak this year, to now enter this game on a four-game winning streak. Devin Gibson does a little bit of everything for the Roadrunners. He leads the team in scoring with 17, second on team in rebounds with six, and first in assists with six. In the first round of the tournament, Gibson scored 28 points, ten assists and ten rebounds in a 97-96 victory over Northwestern State. The guard scored 20 points, ten assists and eight rebounds in the victory of the Cowboys.
McNeese State has three guys who do about everything. Patrick Richard, Diego Kapelan, and P.J. Alawoya. Richard leads the team in scoring with 17 points, Kapelan is second with 15. Alawoya averages 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Cowboys have a solid squad all around.
Texas San-Antonio with the victory here in a mild upset sending the Cowboys to the NIT.
In the America East final, Boston University Terriers meet Stoney Brook for the bid. Boston is 20-13, finishing second in the conference right behind Vermont. Stoney Brook stands at 15-16 on the year, fifth in the conference. Boston defeated Stoney Brook both times this year. John Holland leads the Terriers with 19 points and six rebounds per outing. Daryl Partin contributes with 15 points and four rebounds. Both guys played great versus Stoney Brook this season.
The Seawolves of Stoney Brook are a huge surprise team. They blew out top-seeded Vermont, 69-47 in the semifinals. After a disapointing season, the Seawolves really seem to be putting it all together now. Leonard Hayes scored 20 points for the Seawolves in their demolishing of Vermont. Stoney Brook is on a four-game winning streak. Can they continue their magic and defeat Boston? Brian Dougher will have to step up, as he leads the Seawolves with 13 points. Dougher struggled versus the Catamounts of Vermont, only scoring four points. Stoney Brook won the regular season crown last year, only to lose in the semifinals to Boston. Revenge this time around. Not likely as Boston wins.
In the Conference USA final, Memphis squares off against UTEP. Both teams were on the bubble before the Conference USA tournament began, now they seem to be off this. Memphis is 23-9 on the year, and UTEP is 25-8. Both teams made easy work of their semifinal competition, with UTEP beating Tulsa and Memphis dismantling East Carolina. UTEP defeated Memphis, 74-47 in their head-to-head matchup.
Memphis is led by Will Barton. The freshman guard leads the team with 13 points and five rebounds. Wesley Witherspoon contributes with ten points and five rebounds. Memphis has had an up and down season, but a three-game winning streak now is big.
Randy Culpepper leads the Miners with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists. The guard scored 20 points in UTEP's victory over Memphis. Christian Polk contributes with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. The Miners began the year on a tear under new coach Tim Floyd, winning nine of their first 11 games.
UTEP easily defeated Memphis in their lone matchup. This game will be closer, though the Miners earn the automatic bid, while Memphis snatches an at-large.
