Saturday college games update
February 19th 2011 23:46
There have been a slew of great games today. Highly-ranked teams going down. Second-ranked Texas and fourth-ranked Pittsburgh lost. Seventh-ranked Notre Dame went down. Three-ranked teams: Villanova, Syracuse, and North Carolina all struggled versus lesser competition.
The Longhorns primed to take over the number-one spot on Monday after Kansas lost to Kansas State on Wednesday couldn't hold up their end of the bargain. The Cornhuskers of Nebraska know got that big win which could propel them from a bubble team to a team in the mix for the NCAA tournament. Nebraska is 18-8 on the year, while Texas fell to 23-4. This was the Longhorns first conference loss. The Cornhuskers hadn't beaten a team in the top-3 since 1994, so this win was huge.
St. Johns is another team which could see their bubble status end with the win over Pitt. The Red Storm defeated the Panthers by the slimmest of margins at 60-59. Guard Dwight Hardy has to be considered for Big East player of the year honors. The guard was called upon to give St. Johns the win today and he delievered with a little turn-around layup in the waning seconds of the game. Hardy has guided St. Johns to a 17-9 mark, and this win ranks up there with the victory over Duke last month.
West Virginia got their 17th win of the year by defeating Notre Dame. Coach Bob Huggins had the Mountaineers play easily their best game of the year today. The Big East is the nation's best conference and today's action proves this fact. Notre Dame fell apart in the second half after both teams played equal for the first half. Truck Bryant lead the Mountaineers to a 72-58 win over the Fighting Irish.
Villanova was taken to overtime in their win over DePaul, 77-75. Syracuse knocked off Rutgers 74-70, also in overtime. The Tar Heels struggled to score but somehow got the victory, 48-46 over Boston College.
A great start for the weekend with more stellar games left.
