San Antonio and Los Angeles preview
March 5th 2011 06:02
In two days, the top two teams in the West will face off for the third time this year. San Antonio has won both occasions thus far over the Los Angeles Lakers. Nothing on the surface screams that the Spurs will falter here. Lets take a closer look. San Antonio is a league leading 51-11 and the Lakers are 44-19.
San Antonio won the last meeting, 89-88 just over a month ago at Staples Center there in LA. Antonio McDyess saved the Spurs, tipping in a missed shot on the last possession. The Spurs had four shots in the waning moments of the game, and finally got one to go in. Tony Parker led the way for San Antonio, scoring 21 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Pau Gasol had 19 points and seven boards for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant was held to 15 points, but he added ten assists. This game was the Lakers to win, they just couldn't get it done. The Spurs won the first meeting, 97-82 pushing their record to 27-4.
Miami went into San Antonio, Friday night and got whipped right from the start. The Spurs jumped on the Heat, taking a 22-point lead after just one quarter. San Antonio went on to win 125-95 as Parker returned after only two days out with an injury. He was expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Miami was tired after the late game last night and then trip to Texas, but they didn't even show up. The Lakers are ahead of the Bobcats, late in the fourth, likely getting the win.
San Antonio has gone from a team who wins with strong inside play to a team more guard oriented. Parker and Manu Ginoboli, make this team fly. Tim Duncan is getting older and having his worst season by far. Dejuan Blair, and George Hill have both had great seasons adding to the teams depth with both coming off the bench. Ginoboli leads the team in scoring with 18 points per game. Parker averages 17 points and seven assists.
Bryant leads the team with 25 points, five assists, and five rebounds per game. Gasol and Ron Artest when they want to be are capable performers on the court. They have struggled with inconsistency this year. Lamar Odom, is another guy that has had problems being consistent. The Lakers are still 44-19, but they have had more issues this season then they are accustomed too.
The Lakers have Bryant and his supporting cast. They always seem to get the job done when it matters most, come playoff time. This year, the western conference crown will go through San Antonio, adding a great difficulty, Los Angeles has not endured in winning their most recent championships. San Antonio wins here, though expect Bryant not too go down easily.
