Here are some of the highlights from the long weekend of college football.
Top three teams remain the same: Oregon, Auburn and TCU all won their games and stayed in the same order in the polls. Oregon after a slow start Friday, dominated Arizona for an easy win. Alabama handed Auburn the victory in the Iron Bowl, and the second ranked team gladly accepted the gift. Multiple fumbles inside the Auburn ten yard line did the host Crimson Tide in. TCU is done with their regular season schedule after an easy victory over New Mexico and now will wait and see if either Oregon or Auburn loses. The Ducks travel to Corvallis for a Civil War matchup versus Oregon State on Saturday. Auburn faces off for the SEC conference title game against South Carolina.
Coaching dismissals begin: Two coaches have already been fired with more soon to follow. University of Miami coach Randy Shannon was the first victim hours after the Hurricanes lost to Central Florida in overtime, 23-20. Miami finished the year 7-5, and Shannon was 28-22 as Hurricane coach. Indiana fired Bill Lynch, their coach of three seasons, Sunday afternoon. Indiana was 4-8 on the season. Lynch had a record of 19-30 as coach.
Northern Illinois joins the top 25:For the first time this year, an Mid-American conference team is in the top 25. Northern Illinois finished the regular season 10-2 and will face Miami of Ohio (8-4) for the MAC title game Saturday. The Huskies from Northern Illinois cruised past Eastern Michigan, 71-3 in their regular season finale Saturday.
No bowl game for Texas: One year after vying for the National title, the Texas Longhorns will be watching the post-season action from their seats. Texas (5-7) enjoyed a great start this season, winning the first three games on the schedule before getting upset by UCLA. An improbable win over Nebraska plus easily dispatching of Florida Atlantic was all the Longhorns could muster after this. This was Texas's first losing season since 1997.
