Richard Jefferson out at San Antonio
December 8th 2011 00:10
Former Arizona small forward Richard Jefferson was the first player to get moved due to the new amnesty clause. Jefferson was set to make $9.2 million this year, and $30 million over the next three seasons.
Caron Butler, former Dallas Maverick player, is set to take over as the new starting small forward at San Antonio. He met with team officials on Wednesday, and both sides liked what they saw. The Spurs will still have to pay Jefferson his full contract, but it won't count against them in the salary cap. This makes available the full mid-level exception to sign Butler, starting at $5 million. San Antonio would also be under the salary cap, thus won't have to pay luxury tax.
Butler only played 29 games with Dallas last season after rupturing his patellar tendon in his right knee. Mavericks officials and Butler, both believe the knee is back to 100%. Yet, the team was reluctant to offer anything over one season to the former Connecticut Husky.
The forward has already met with Chicago and the LA Clippers. He is expected to talk with Indiana and Detroit, later on in the week. Free agency and training camps are still on for Friday. Players are expected to vote on the new deal tonight.
