Record Breaking Day in the NFL
January 2nd 2012 00:08
Several records fell on a wild day of NFL football today.
The Green Bay Packers rested starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the teams game against Detroit. Backup quarterback Matt Flynn started for the Packers. All Flynn did was throw for 480 yards, and six touchdowns in the team's 45-41 win over Detroit, pushing their record to 15-1 on the year. The 480 yards is a new Green Bay franchise record. The Lions with the loss now get to play the streaking New Orleans Saints in the wild-card round.
All the Saints did today was beat Carolina, 45-17. Tight-end Jimmy Graham set a new NFL record for most receiving yards at his position. Graham eclipsed Kellen Winslow's previous mark of 1,290 yards by twenty yards. Running back Darren Sproles set a new NFL record for combined yards with 2,969 on the season, beating Derrick Mason's mark set in 2000. Quarterback Drew Brees continued padding his new passing yards mark with 389 more yards. Brees also set records for passing efficiency and completed passes for the league.
New England tight end Rob Gronkowski topped Graham's receiving mark for tight ends. Gronkowski finished with 1,327 yards, 17 more then Graham. The Patriots, rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat Buffalo, 49-21 and clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. New England did set a new NFL record for most passing yards allowed by their defense with 4,727 yards on the season.
Spots are still available in both conferences for their playoffs as Denver and Oakland duke it out for the AFC West, and those two teams are also in contention for the wildcard spot with Cincinnati and Tennessee. Later tonight, the NFC East is up for grabs, along with a wild-card game next week of hosting Atlanta. The Falcons easily beat Tampa Bay today, clinching the 5th seed in the NFC.
