General Manager David Kahn has finally let former Minnesota Timberwolves Head Coach Kurt Rambis go, seven weeks after the story was initially broke. Kahn for some reason, decided to not officially go through with the firing at that point, instead he let it drag on, until today!
Rambis despite his 32-132 record for the three seasons he coached at Minnesota, knows this is the bottom of the barrell in the NBA for coaching jobs. How else would you describe how Kahn handled this situation? Even with Rambis technically the head coach, he wasn't able to attend the official signing of point guard Rickey Rubio or even the NBA Draft on June 23rd. This was when the story unofficially broke about Minnesota severing ties with Rambis. Instead the saga dragged on and on until today. Rambis will be paid $4 million dollars as part of the remainder of his contract with the team.
Kahn is no stranger to this type of treatment to his head coach. Just ask former head coach Kevin McHale. The former Boston Celtics great had uncertainty over his head after Kahn got hired into the job as general manager in 2009. Minnesota has been in a tailspin ever since Kahn took the job. Not only on the basketball court but off the court as nobody wants to play for the team. Now after this firing of Rambis, nobody in their right mind will want to coach the team.
Here's to hope that Minnesota will try and finally turn this ship around. The pieces are in place on the court after adding Derrick Williams and Rubio to the nucleus of Kevin Love, Darko Millicic and Wesley Johnson. If Kahn can continue this string of good luck and add a coach who he will actually give a chance to get this team going, then look out! Minnesota and Kahn failed on Rambis, now he is onto bigger and better jobs. Now it is on Minnesota to find someone worthwhile to head this ship soon.
