Race for eighth in the western conference
March 24th 2011 20:54
Three teams are all in the heat of battle for one spot in the Western Conference in the NBA. Phoenix, Memphis, and Houston all want this precious eighth position and the right to face off against San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs. Utah even has an outside chance, though this dwlinding away with a 36-36 record. The Spurs are 57-14, six games ahead of the Lakers in the West. Chicago has 51 wins as well, tops in the East.
Memphis is currently in the eighth spot, ahead of the other teams by two games. Phoenix is 36-34, while Houston after a terrible start is 38-34 now. The Rockets began the season, 5-12 but have rebounded nicely. Memphis riding Zach Randolph and Rudy Gay, are 40-32, one-half game ahead of New Orleans. So the Hornets even have an outside shot at the eighth spot. So much is up in the air yet this season, even with the teams having 12 or less games to play.
The Grizzlies without Gay are in trouble of clinching a playoff spot. Though a big three-game winning streak, including wins over Utah, and Boston has Memphis inching closer to a playoff berth. Memphis has five games left against teams over .500, including two meetings with the Hornets and one with Portland. San Antonio comes to town, and Memphis travels to Chicago. The team will rely even more on Randolph, without Gay, but so far the forward has responded. Marc Gasol has even stepped up, going with 11 points and 11 rebounds against Boston. The Grizzlies should win five games, to finish with 45 wins. Key to the schedule are those two games with the Hornets. A split will help matters out.
Houston doesn't play again until Sunday, when they travel to Miami. Six teams including, Miami, sit above .500 encounter Houston for the remainder of the season. The Hornets, Spurs, 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, and Atlanta Hawks remain. Houston is looking at maybe six more wins, and finish with 44 wins.
Phoenix has 12 games left after beating Toronto last night. Eight of the teams remaining have winning records, making the Suns chance for a playoff berth very slim. A big five game road swing next month includes stops at San Antonio, Chicago, New Orleans, and Dallas. Phoenix has the hardest road of all these teams up for the eighth spot. Expect at least five wins, and 41 wins.
Memphis does have the easiest road, but also the toughest at the same time. Losing Gay hurts for the season. Houston should stay neck and neck with the Grizzlies, while Utah, and Phoenix both slip back.
