The Puerto Rico national basketball team wants Louisville coach Rick Pitino to lead the nation into the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament next August in Argentina. The deal has not yet been reached but is close.
Pitino has had quite the storied career as an coach with stops at Boston University, Providence, Kentucky and now Louisville as an college coach. Pitino led the last three colleges he has coached to the final four. With the NBA, Pitino coached at New York and Boston. He struggled with both teams, only lasting 50 games with Boston. At New York, Pitino was 102-146 overall.
For all his success as an coach controversy has not escaped him. Pitino was an interim head coach at Hawaii after the head coach, Bruce O’Neil was fired during the season. The NCAA went onto to find eight violations in which Pitino had a hand in at Hawaii. A total of 64 violations were committed by Hawaii. In 2009, Karen Cunagin Sypher attempted to extort money from Pitino, claiming he raped her. The charges were find to be false.
Louisville is 8-1 on the season and ranked 20th in the top 25.
