Progress in the NBA Labor Talks?

October 28th 2011 03:02
Both sides met for 22 and a half hours the last couple of days, now some hints of progress is being seen in the NBA lockout.

The sides will meet again on Friday. Both David Stern, NBA Commissioner, and Billy Hunter, Union Executive Director, are sounding optimistic. Hunter claims a deal is within striking distance and Stern looks for something to happen within the next couple of days.

Basketball related income remains a huge sticking point for both sides. The players want no less then a 52-48 split while the owners may finally be coming around to this. Derek Fisher, the union president, is also optimistic saying progress was made, as evident by the length of the talks.

Hunter claims if a deal is made by Sunday or Monday, the whole season can still be played. This remains to be seen as the first two weeks were already canceled but anything is possible.

In other news a trio of NBA All-stars have pulled out of a world tour in Puerto Rico. Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul will no longer make an exhibition basketball game in Puerto Rico on Sunday. Amare Stoudemire, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, Carlos Boozer, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffith, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo are just a few of the larger names expected to join. Kevin Durant is having some reservations about playing as well after originally signing onto play.

James, Anthony, and Paul are hopeful the league will soon begin play. A portion of the profits from the game will go to charities of the players choice.

The players moved it down from 53 to 52? That means there was some legit progress elsewhere.I hate how the league always compares the Kings and Lakers; it's the only example in their favor. Payroll has little to do with how good a franchise is in the NBA; it's about drafting. Take a look at the best organizations in the game; these are the teams who drafted superstars. Thunder, Spurs, Bulls, Lakers, Mavs etc... You gotta hit big in the draft, because then you can get your star guy for way cheaper than FA. It's all about a smart FO.
