Preview of the Final Four

March 31st 2011 23:16
Two so-called big schools are facing off in the second game of the final four on Saturday, Connecticut and Kentucky. The first game pits VCU against Butler. All four teams are huge surprises to still be playing, though three of them have been here before. Butler is the most experienced in tournaments of the group, while VCU has experience of their own with post-season play. Connecticut, and Kentucky have guys who have played in tournaments before, though many of the players are youngsters.

Butler vs VCU: It will be a treat to watch these two teams play against one another. Would of been nice if the final four was re-seeded but at least someone marginally new will be up for the championship. Butler, of course was here last season, while VCU tore up the CBI tournament. The Rams won the lower tier tournament in a two game sweep.

Butler is led by Shelvin Mack and Matt Howard, both key components of last year's team. Ronald Nored, and Shane Vanzant are both back as key contributors for the team. The Bulldogs wouldn't die when it appeared Florida was going to win their game last week. Butler used a steady stream of Howard and great defense to upend Florida.

VCU has a solid group of guards, and one elite forward in Jamie Skeen who transferred from Wake Forest. Skeen has been dominant in the tournament. He outplayed Kansas's twin Morris brothers in the elite eight game. VCU started out slow versus Kansas, but quickly woke up in defeating the Jayhawks.

Both of these games are difficult to pick as any are. VCU is winning games with solid outside shooting from Skeen, Joey Rodrieguz, and Bradford Burgess. Butler has great wing defensive players, better then all the Rams opponents in the tournament thus far. On a hunch, I am going to pick Butler.

Kentucky vs Connecticut: Which team is younger? Kentucky and Connecticut both have a wide array of players on the team, a few are elder statesmen, but most are younger. Both teams have been on a hot-streak with the Wildcats winning the SEC conference tournament, and Connecticut taking the Big-East. Hard to top the Huskies tournament run, both in the conference and NCAA touranment thus far.

Brandon Knight, Terrance Jones, Doron Lamb all key contributors and starters on the Kentucky team. Josh Harrelson, Darius Miller have been huge during the tournament. After Kentucky beat Ohio State in the regional semifinals, they all of a sudden became the team to beat.

The Huskies are more then Kemba Walker, though the guard does about everything for the team. Jeremy Lamb has emerged as a solid scorer to aide Walker. Roscoe Smith, and Alex Oriakhi man the middle for the Huskies.

Knight, and Walker will both put on a show for the nation to see. Whoever scores the most of the two, team will emerge as the winner. Kentucky has the more supporting cast, and the Wildcats will throw different looks at Walker. Connecticut barely got by Arizona, this won't be the case Saturday, as Kentucky wins. The Wildcats win another tight game, going down to the final seconds.
