Preview of the East and Southeast region semis
March 24th 2011 03:25
Kicking off Friday's action is North Carolina and Marquette in a classic Big East versus ACC battle. The Tar Heels are the second seed in the East while Marquette is 11. The Golden Eagles have welcomed some luck along the way, and defeated Syracuse for the second time this year over the weekend.
North Carolina is the champion of the ACC. They didn't get this title from not playing good basketball. They have been on a tear as of late, entering this game at 28-7. The Tar Heels were behind for most of the game against Washington before turning up the jets in the final moments, earning the win. Marquette is similar to Washington, as a athletic team that goes deep.
Marquette is another of those teams who were on the bubble, but earned that spot from their play here in the tournament. The Golden Eagles are 22-14 on the year, but are easily playing their best basketball of the year. They are finally coming together. Jimmey Butler leads the way with 16 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
The Tar Heels continue dancing, toppling Marquette in the final minutes. The Golden Eagles will be ahead for the first half. North Carolina using the better talent, find a way to win in the end. Marquette's magic ends, though they proved their worthiness in the tournament.
Kansas vs Richmond: The Spiders won the Atlantic 10 tournament conference final. They should be higher then the 12th-seed the tournament gave them. Kansas is the top-seed in the Southeast, racing through the season, losing just two games.
Richmond took care of Morehead State with ease after having a battle with Vanderbilt. Now the tougher competition begins with Kansas. Justin Harper and Kevin Anderson are great players, the caliber of guys Kansas are used to facing in conference. Harper needs to step up as he has all year long going against the Morris brothers.
The Jayhawks with the Morris twins and a slew of athletic guards have no end in sight. Many picked Kansas to be final four worthy, and the upstarts from Richmond will not end this run. Kansas moves on, overwhelming the Spiders in the end, after a close game is played for most of the way.
Kentucky vs Ohio State: The top-seed in the East faces off with the fourth-seed Kentucky with the right to face the winner of the North Carolina and Marquette game. Ohio State ran past George Mason on Sunday. A blitz of three-pointers from all diffferent directions put the Patriots away in the first half. Now the competition steps up with the champion from the SEC in Kentucky.
Nobody can beat Ohio State if they are shooting like they did on Sunday. A 98-66 win was the result of an onslaught of great shooting. Now Jared Sullinger, David Lighty, William Buford, and Jon Diebler amongst others are ready for Kentucky. The Buckeyes drained 16 three's for the game, seven of these came from Lighty.
Kentucky hasn't played well yet this tournament. They struggled with Princeton and with West Virginia. Brando n Knight had to score 32 points for the Wildcats to continue. Terrance Jones will have his hands full with Buford in this game. Josh Harrelson in the middle needs to play out of his mind, to control Sullinger.
Kentucky has the athleticism to match with Ohio State, or do they? Does anyone? The Buckeyes are playing the best of every team in the tournament. Kentucky does keep the game close to the end. Ohio State wins in the final minutes and continues to dance, next up North Crolina.
Virginia Commonwealth vs Florida State: Both teams are big surprises to still be alive in the tournament. VCU at the 11th-seed had to win a play-in game to make the actual tournament. Florida State defeated a good Texas A&M team, then blew out Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were predicted to give Kansas a run for their money in the regional final. Now the Jayhawks if they beat Richmond, get to play an 11th or 10th seed for the right to make the final four!
VCU has really been shooting the ball well. Thanks to this and great defense, they are still playing. Jamie Skeen mans the middle, while a group of guards do everything else. Bradford Burgess, and Joey Rodriguez are great guards who are making names for themselves here.
How is this Florida State team winning? I thought for sure Texas A&M would beat them, then Notre Dame would win in the third round matchup. Nope, the Seminoles continue rolling. VCU has a good defense, Florida State employs a great defense. Opportune three-point shooting in the first half of the game with Notre Dame, reminds me of Virginia Tech and how they have been shooting their first three games. A balanced scoring effort with Bernard James, Derwin Kitchen, Michael Snaer and Chris Singleton are huge for the Seminoles in addition to the defense.
Defense versus defense is what this game comes down too. Both teams can shoot the ball when they need too, but they excel at defense. VCU is playing on another level then everyone else they have played thus far. Florida State had issues with Texas A&M, and staved off a rally from Notre Dame, though beat them by 14. I'm going with VCU to continue their dream and to face Kansas.
