Preview of Texas and Kansas
January 22nd 2011 00:55
Top-ranked Ohio State takes on 22-ranked Illinois as part of a plethora of games, pitting ranked teams. The Buckeyes will likely win, though with difficulty. Only three unbeaten teams remain in Mens college basketball. Ohio State, Kansas and San Diego State who is off Saturday, but have a huge game next week versus BYU. I will take a closer look at Kansas's game versus Texas tomorrow here.
The game is played in Lawrence, Kansas which right away gives the Jayhawks an advantage. Kansas has won 69 straight games in Lawrence. Texas is coming off a big over their main in-state rival Texas A&M, by 21 points Wednesday.
A blowout victory over Baylor on Monday showed just how good the Morris twins, Markieff and Marcus are. Markieff went for 19 points and nine rebounds, while Marcus scored 25 and had five boards. The two lead the Jayhawks in scoring and rebounding. The Jayhawks were mired in close games before Monday's victory in conference play. Nebraska, Iowa State, and Michigan all got their chances to defeat the Jayhawks, only to come up short. If Kansas can ever get freshman point guard Josh Selby up to speed, they will run away with the Big-12 conference. The freshman missed the first nine games of the season, as per NCAA mandated. He averages 12 points for Kansas since being re-instated.
Texas is 15-3 on the season, and 3-0 in BIG-12 action, with easy victories over Oklahoma, and Texas Tech before the Aggies on Wednesday. Combo guard-forward Jordan Hamilton leads the way, averaging 19 points per game and seven rebounds. Freshman Tristan Thompson chips in with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Both teams have elite forwards on their squads. The key to the game will be the point guards. Both freshman, Selby and Texas point guard Corey Joseph. Joseph averages 11 points and three assists for the Longhorns. Whichever guard handles the opposing team's defense best will lead their squad to victory. History does not paint a very kind picture for Joseph and the Longhorns to win, Saturday. A freshman guard with Kansas's relentless pressure from their fans and defense may be too much to handle. Expect a great game with the Longhorns giving it all they got, only to fall short this time around.
