Preview of San Diego State and BYU
January 25th 2011 02:28
The first big challenge for Steve Fisher's San Diego State squad comes from in-conference rival BYU Cougars, Wednesday night. San Diego State is 20-0 on the season, five of these wins coming in the Mountain West Conference. BYU likewise has gone unbeaten in conference play, and is 19-1 on the season. BYU's only loss came to UCLA, 86-79 on December 18th.
The Aztecs are led by forward Kawhi Leonard and guard D.J. Gay. Leonard is averaging 16 points, ten rebounds and three assists. Gay is chipping in with 13 points and three assists. San Diego State's toughest contest came early on this season in the form of Gonzaga. The Zags have already established themselves as a major national player. San Diego State wanted to be up there with them. The Aztecs won a tough battle, 79-76 at Spookane. Forward Billy White scored 30 points for San Diego State in the win. The Aztecs are not flashy, they just find ways to win games. Now they are in for their toughest test of the season.
BYU is not just an one-man team, though it may seem that way. Senior guard Jimmer Fredette at times this season has scored most of the Cougars points. Fredette is averaging 27 points per game this season. He has gone over the 40-point mark twice, and 30-points three times. In the loss versus UCLA, Fredette scored 25 points. Guard Jackson Emery helps Fredette out as do forwards Noah Hartsock, and Jordan Davies. Emery averages 13 points, Hartsock ten points and six rebounds. Davies chips in with 12 points and five boards.
Both teams are not your flash-in-the-pan. They are both for real. Great individual leaders in Leonard and Fredette, and capable players helping out. BYU averages 85 points per game, fifth in the country. They win games not with great defense but just outscoring their opponent. San Diego State wins with the same formula, though with a little more defense, in large part from Leonard and forward Malcom Thomas who averages two blocks per game. Fredette will score in bunches, but the Aztecs do just enough to keep their record perfect.
