Preview of Ohio State and Penn State
March 1st 2011 02:51
The Buckeyes from Ohio State on Monday, took over the vacated top spot after Duke lost Saturday night. Now in the first game as number one again, Ohio State travels to Happy Valley and Penn State. The previous two top-ranked teams have lost to unranked opponents, like Penn State is. And Penn State nearly pulled off the shocker earlier this year when Ohio State sat second in the country, just falling short, 69-66. The Buckeyes had to win just to grab the top spot from Duke who lost earlier on in the week.
This season has been one full of ups and downs for the Nittany Lions. Mostly downs as their record indicates at 15-12. Most of these losses have been with Penn State being competitive, just not good enough to get over the hump. Nearly beating Purdue who was 13th at the time, now they are sixth in the land. Also three victories over top-20 teams in Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Illinois show how good this team could be.
Talor Battle and Jeff Brooks lead the Nittany Lions into this game. Battle averages 20 points while Brooks chips in with 13 and seven rebounds. Point guard Tim Frazier is the glue of the team going for five assists per game. Penn State has some talented guys, but Ohio State is known for great team defense, which will make things difficult.
Center Jared Sullinger does it all for Ohio State, averaging 19 points and nine boards per game. Guard William Buford helps out going for 14 points. Ohio State is 27-2 on the year, only losses coming to Purdue and Wisconsin, both times on the road.
Sullinger scored 19 points the first time these two teams faced off. He had a big three-point play to finish the game, clinching the victory for Ohio State. Penn State shot great for the game, going for 55%. Senior forward David Jackson led the team with 19 points. The Buckeyes are going to be hard to beat here. Penn State plays Ohio State really good though. The game will go down once again to the final moments, with the Buckeyes winning thanks to Sullinger's interior prescence.
