Preview of Dallas vs San Antonio
January 12th 2011 22:59
Earlier on in the year, a game between these two juggernauts was looking like a Western Conference Finals preview. Now after a few losses to Dallas when star Dirk Nowitski was out due to injury, some appeal has evaporated. Still it will be a great game, and is a key battle for the Western Conference. The game is set for Friday, as part of 12 games for the night. The season series sits at one game apiece with both teams winning on their home-court.
San Antonio(32-6) is unbeatable at home, or even on the road for that matter this season. An 20-2 mark is hard to top when the Spurs play in the AT&T Center. Manu Ginoboli and Tony Parker are the top scorers for the Spurs, with Manu averaging 19 points, and Parker 17. Tim Duncan may be getting a little older and seeing his minutes slip a little, but he is still averaging nearly a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Sixth man George Hill leads a strong bench for the Spurs, with 11 points.
While Nowitski is still out with an ankle injury, losses have begun to mount on the Mavericks. Two straight losses to Oklahoma City, and Orlando, two streaking teams, nonetheless have hurt the Mavs mojo. Dirk is out for Wednesdays game with Indiana, and his return is probable for Friday. Dallas needs him to keep up with the Spurs. Guards Deshawn Stevenson, Jason Terry, and forward Shawn Marion have stepped up in Nowitski's absence, picking up their scoring and rebounding averages. Losing forward Caron Butler to an season-ending injury has not helped matters out. Nowitski leads the Mavs with 24 points per game, while Terry is second with 15. Center Tyson Chandler averages nine points and nine boards per game. Another elder, Jason Kidd leads the team with nine assists.
Without Dirk, this game will be one-sided. Dallas doesn't have the firepower to keep up with San Antonio's guards. Look for Parker to dominate Kidd, as the Spurs gain the victory and upper hand in the key season series.
