Preview of Boston and Portland
January 26th 2011 00:30
The Portland Trailblazers as of late have been playing better basketball, winning five straight games.. Even if there competition is less then stellar, five straight wins, can get you feeling good about yourselves. Then came last night.
The Blazers started out flat-footed from the beginning and couldn't recover in the end, losing 96-81 to Sacramento, in Portland. The Blazers are 16-6 at home on the season, but losing to the Kings, was a huge downer. Portland played bad and fell to 25-21 this season. Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge after the game had an x-ray done on his right hip, today an MRI took place. Both were negative, and Blazers fans everywhere can breath a little sigh of relief. Two days off before the big, bad, Boston Celtics come to town.
The game is scheduled for Thursday, brings Boston and an eastern conference best record of 33-10, likely to be one better after today. Boston hosts Cleveland, who are in the midst of an 17-game losing streak. Boston is 12-7 on the road, a sign of tough away games to come. The same old guys continue to get it done for the Celtics. Ray Allen. Paul Pierce. Kevin Garnett. Rajon Rondo. And now Shaquille O'Neal, who may not be available for the game, good news as he always kills the Blazers. Pierce leads the team scoring 19 points per game, Allen backs him with 17. Forward Garnett, another guy who gives the Blazers a tough game, averages 15 points and nine boards per game. Then there's Rondo, whose 13 assists per game average, easily triumphs all other guards in the league.
The Blazers, thanks to a stretch of home-games versus teams below .500, began to look pretty good. The lack of depth hurts the team however. All the injuries, belittles the squad. Guard Brandon Roy, center Marcus Camby, center Greg Oden, guys the team needs to win, are in street-clothes. Aldridge, has stepped up mightily this season. Increasing all his career averages, should earn the forward a spot on the all-star team. Guard Andre Miller averages 13 points and seven assists as the distributor. He is in for a tough game with Rondo. Backups like Patty Mills and Armon Johnson will need to be ready to go out, to match Rondo's speed and skill.
The Blazers, fun to watch this season, are in for two very tough games ahead. Thursday, Boston, next Tuesday San Antonio. Both games at the Rose Garden. Both games winnable, though not likely. Aldridge and a full team effort, can give the team a chance versus Boston. The Celtics are too good for anything else.
