December 17th 2011 17:10
Just like that, only seven days after the lockout officially ended and training camps began, the NBA began preseason basketball. Eight teams enjoyed their first games of the year, and another eight will begin today.
The Chicago Bulls in a rematch of last season's first round playoff matchup versus Indiana, continued their dominance of the Pacers with a 95-86 win. Chicago fell behind early, but rebounded to an easy win. Derrick Rose and Luol Deng both scored 16 points in the game for Chicago. Leading the way for Indiana was Tyler Hansborough who totaled 19 points. New free agent signings for both teams, David West at Indiana and Richard Hamilton at Chicago didn't see any action.
Just two days after trading off their leader, the New Orleans Hornets won over Memphis, 97-90. Chris Paul is now a Los Angeles Clipper, though this didn't stop New Orleans. None of the new guys were in action yet, as Jarret Jack led the team in scoring with 24 points. The former Georgia Tech player, also had six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Tony Allen led the Grizzlies with 17 points. Rudy Gay, back from an injury which sidelined him for most of last season, scored 15 for Memphis.
The Philadelphia 76ers overwhelmed the Washington Wizards, 103-78. Philadelphia was ahead by 36 after three quarters in a game, they were never seriously tested in. Lou Williams led the team with 19 points in the win. Evan Turner pitched in with 16. Washington only had one player score in double figures, Andray Blatche with 18 points. John Wall was held to eight points on 3-12 shooting.
Top-pick Kyrie Irving debuted as a Cleveland Cavalier, leading the team to a 91-87 win over Detroit. Irving scored 21 points, using 13 free throws to his advantage in the game. Austin Daye scored 18 for the Pistons, while Ben Gordon totaled 17.
Today's action includes:
New York at New Jersey
San Antonio at Houston
Milwaukee at Minnesota
Sacramento at Golden State
