Portland's 1977 NBA Championship

August 15th 2011 22:47
The 1977 NBA Finals matchup was between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Portland Trailblazers. Nobody would of expected this team to make the NBA Finals after a regular season that saw them go 49-33. But yet here they were in the NBA Finals in just their seventh year of existence

The Blazers had a good team led by center Bill Walton and power forward Maurice Lucas. Other key players included Dave Twardzik, Johnny Davis, and Lionel Hollins. Portland outsted Chicago in the first round then were to face Denver. The Nuggets had a couple of great big men in Dan Issel and David Thompson. Portland won game one in Denver by the slimmest of margins, 101-100. The Nuggets took game two, before losing the next two in Portland. Denver won game five, but the Blazers ended the series then in game six. They were to face the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

The Lakers were the top team in the league during the regular season with a 53-29 record. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the leagues best center. Portland however went onto shock the Lakers in game one, 121-109. This set the tone for the rest of the series. Portland pulled off a stunning sweep of the Lakers in the conference finals. Now came a meeting with Dr.J and the 76ers.

Philadelphia won the first two games of the series on their home-court. Portland committed 34 turnovers in game one. Dr. J scored 33 points and Doug Collins added 30 for the 76ers in the 107-101 game one victory. Game two was more of the same as Philadelphia won by 18. Then a different Portland team showed up at home. Portland behind Lucas and Walton won by 18 in game three. Lucas scored 27 points, while Walton nearly had a triple-double with 20 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists.

Portland dominated game four, winning 130-98. Then in game five, Portland overworked Philadelphia in the middle, racking up 59 rebounds for the game and winning, 110-104. Erving scored 37 in the loss. Portland headed back home for game six and a potential clinching victory in the series. Walton pulled down 23 rebounds and had eight blocks in the Blazers win. Erving tried his best to keep his team in the game, but Portland led most of the way. Still George McGinnis had a chance to tie the game up in the waning seconds but his shot went awry. Portland won the game, 109 to 107 and the series. Walton was named the NBA Finals MVP.

Portland has made it to the NBA Finals twice since 1977, only to lose to Detroit and Chicago.

Great recap of the 1977 Finals man. Maybe Lionel Hollins can squeeze another ring out of the Grizzlies.
