Picks for NFL games this weekend
January 7th 2011 00:12
New Orleans at Seattle: The Seahawks by merit of winning the terrible NFC West division now get to host the reigning Super Bowl Champs. New Orleans(11-5) was looking ahead to this game, and lost to Tampa Bay last week. This after winning the game of the year over Atlanta. Seattle (7-9) is the first team ever to make the playoffs with a losing record. Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst played well enough to get the Seahawks the win over St. Louis. Matt Hasselbeck is available if needed. New Orleans will be missing top rusher Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas. Now Reggie Bush and former Seahawk Julius Jones will get the brunt of the carries. The game is close for a while but too much offensive talent for the Seahawks to keep pace with. New Orleans wins, now onto Chicago.
New York Jets at Indianapolis: A rematch of the AFC title game last year, now starts things off for the AFC. New York (11-5) after a great start ran into some offensive issues, and now seem to be on the right track again. Indianapolis (10-6) are in the playoffs yet again. Some things never change. Even with problems on both sides of the ball, Peyton and company win the division yet again. Indianapolis won last years playoff match-up, and win this years also. Thanks to the Colts defensive front who put relentless pressure on New York quarterback Mark Sanchez and his sore shoulder, and not Manning, the Colts advance, and face Pittsburgh.
Baltimore at Kansas City: What a year for the Chiefs. Kansas City (10-6) was expected to compete with San Diego for the tops in the division, not to win it all. Now Matt Cassel and the rest of the Chiefs get Baltimore (12-4). This game has the makings of a very low scoring battle with both defenses going toe to toe. Baltimore has struggled down the stretch of the season even with winning 12 games. One thing remains and that is a strong defense led by Ray Lewis. Kansas City counters with great running backs who will test the Ravens defense. Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones both have had spectacular years. The Ravens defense will neutralize these two guys leaving Cassel as the teams main option. Don't think Cassel is up for the challenge. Baltimore wins another low-scoring battle and face New England next.
Green Bay at Philadelphia: The game of the week features one hot team and another squad cooling off. Green Bay (10-6) won two straight big games over New York Giants and Chicago to earn a playoff spot. Philadelphia (11-5) struggled down the stretch, and star quarterback Michael Vick sat out the season finale to rest up. The Eagles offense is the teams strength when they are hitting on all cylinders. Vick, running back LeSean McCoy, receivers Desean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin, all are big play threats whenever they touch the ball. The Packers defense is their strength with their passing defense being amongst the leagues best. Aaron Rodgers will make plays for the offense. Will he get rushing help from Brandon Johnson? Green Bay needs a big game on the ground, as Philadelphia also has a great passing defense. The Packers won an early season game, 27-20, knocking Kevin Kolb out and helping Vick's emergence. This game here is even all across the board. Going with the Eagles with the home-field advantage. A battle of the birds is up next for Vick, traveling back to his old stomping ground, Atlanta.
