Part 2 of Conference Finals Saturday

March 12th 2011 05:10
Here is part 2 of a three-part series.

The Mid-Eastern Final pits Morgan State versus Hampton. Morgan State is 17-13 after defeating top-seeded Bethune-Cookman on Friday night. Hampton has a record of 23-8 as the second seed. Hampton lost 78-72 to Morgan State, the lone time these two faced off during the season.

Morgan State Bears are led by DeWayne Jackson who averages 14 points. The forward also contributes with five rebounds. Kevin Thompson contributes with 13 points and ten rebounds. Morgan State has had an up and down year. They entered the MEAC tournament on a three game losing streak, after winning five straight games.

Hampton is led by Darrion Pellum. The guard averages 18 points and four boards per game. Kwame Morgan, the other guard has also had his share of big games. He averages 16 points and four rebounds. Neither guard played well versus the Bears. Both need to improve their performances.

Morgan State has had a great season, off and on. Hampton will end their run Saturday, sending the Pirates to the NCAA tournament.

The Southwestern Conference final has Alabama State and Grambling facing off. Alabama State is 15-17 this year, while Grambling is 12-20. Both teams have losing records. The Hornets of Alabama State and Grambling State, split their season series with both teams winning on their homecourt. Grambling State knocked off top-seeded Texas Southern.

The Hornets are led by Tramayne Moorer and Tramiane Butler. Moorer averages 13 points and six boards, while Butler chips in with 11 and five rebounds. Alabama State won nine out of their last ten games before losing to Grambling State on March fifth.

Grambling State Tigers are led by Justin Patton who averages 14 points. The Tigers have had some lucky breaks en route to the conference final. Can they emerge with the title and go into the tournament with 13 wins? Wow.

Did I mention both teams have losing records? This is the madness of March. Grambling State and Alabama State, both seem alike on the surface. The Hornets have the better talent of the two, but Grambling State has somehow kept this going thus far. Look for Grambling State to win again.

The Mid-American final has Kent State and Akron going for the bid. Kent State won the regular season and has kept pace throughout the tournament, while Akron pulled a minor upset to enter this game. Akron knocked off Western Michigan in the semifinals to advance. Kent State is 22-10, and Akron is 22-12 on the year. The Golden Flashes finished 12-4 in conference play, and Akron went 9-7.

Kent State and Akron split their season series, adding intrigue to this matchup. The Golden Flashes are led by Justin Greene, and Rodriegux Sherman. Greene averages 16 points and five boards, while Sherman chips in with 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Akron boasts a balanced scoring effort. Nobody really is extravagent on the squad. Nikola Cevetinovic leads the team with 13 points and seven rebounds. The forward struggled versus Kent State this year. Akron does have Brett McKnight who averages 10 points as the second key guy.

Kent State has the better talent of the two squads. Akron may have the better depth. This game bodes to who wins the inside, the Golden Flashes have Greene who outplayed Cevetinovic both games. Kent State wins here.
Justin Greene and Kent State look for the automatic bid versus Akron
