Parity exists in the NBA
April 18th 2011 00:47
Sunday brought something new to the NBA. Something that didn't seem to exist, well there have been some instances of it, but not too often. There were signs of it during Saturday's games but the teams involved didn't seal the deal. Sunday these teams came through with wins. Parity or any team can win is alive in the NBA. New Orleans and Memphis proved this with wins over heavy favorites in the West, the Lakers and San Antonio.
Even when it appeared San Antonio was going to pull away from Memphis and put the game away, they couldn't. The Grizzlies kept fighting and wouldn't let up, until the Spurs gave in. Memphis won game one, 101-98 and stole the home-court advantage away from San Antonio. The Grizzlies jumped out to a five-point lead after the first quarter, 27-22 as Marc Gasol proved himself immediately to Tim Duncan and the other Spurs big men. The teams went back and forth until the Spurs finally began to get to the foul line in the third quarter. Tony Parker, George Hill and complany were drawing fouls, and connecting with the shots from the charity stripe. After a Gary Neal 3-point field goal, the lead ballooned to ten points at 67-57.
Memphis immediately worked at cutting the lead in half before the quarter ended. Then a Zack Randolph layup at the seven minute mark gave the Grizzlies a one-point lead at 81-80. San Antonio could not recover, until six minutes later thanks to a Matt Bonner three-pointer putting them back on top. Only Shane Battier had different ideas about letting the Spurs get the win as he drained a three putting the Grizzlies back up by one with 23 seconds left. Randolph outplayed Duncan in scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds. Duncan led the Spurs with 16 points and 13 boards.
The Lakers came out flat and ended flat. The Hornets won the game, 109-100 in stealing the home-court advantage. New Orleans only committed three turnovers, an all-time playoff team low. Kobe Bryant scored 34 points in a duel with Chris Paul who had 33 points. Paul had 13 assists with all those points. Jarret Jack, Carl Landry, and Aaron Gray played big parts in the Hornets upset. The Hornets led most of the way as it seemed Phil Jackson's crew was un-interested. Maybe losing game one will wake the defending champs up. Paul's jumper with a little over a minute remaining finished off the home team, pushing the Hornets lead to eight.
Boston is currently in a battle with the New York Knicks as another road team aim's to crash the home-teams party. This year anything can happen in the playoffs as everything is wide-open! No clear favorite as the Lakers showed this today in losing to the Hornets. Anyone can win! Tonight the Hornets and the Nuggets clash in their series pitting two very evenly matched teams. The Nuggets will be missing Aaron Affalo which hurts, but I wouldn't want to bet against the road team. Oklahoma City, you have been warned!
