Pacers fire O'Brien

January 31st 2011 00:39
After dropping seven out of their last eight games, Indiana Team President Larry Bird, couldn't take it any longer. The time was now to make a coaching change. On Sunday, he fired head coach Jim O'Brien. Indiana's loss Saturday night to Chicago, 110-89, was the last straw. O'Brien was ejected in the defeat.

Indiana went 121-169 in three and a half seasons as head coach. Indiana had a great start going this season, but the recent slide has pushed them out of the playoff chase. The team has the talent to compete for a playoff spot in the weak Eastern Conference, so a change was needed. Assistant coach Frank Vogel will take over the head coaching job for the remainder of the season.

Vogel has no head coaching experience, but has served as an assistant under O'Brien at both Indiana and Boston. Bird claims Indiana will be in the playoffs with Vogel as the coach. Indiana is currently in the 10th spot in the East, two-and a-half games behind Charlotte and Milwaukee.

With guys like Danny Granger, and Darren Collison on the team, Vogel is inheriting a quality team. If he can get anything out of Roy Hibbert at the center position, Indiana will prosper. Playing rookies Tyler Hansborough and Paul George is something high on Bird's list. Look for both of those guys to have big contributions, the rest of the season.

Yeah, he deserved it. This team is in ruins, and they need a strong defensive coach for the coaching staff to make any difference. This team is just so bad. The next O'Brien that needs to be fired; Bill O'Brein. He is a terrible offensive coordinator. Belichik needs to ax him off.

I would like to see Paul George get some more PT too. Collison and Granger are nice pieces, but overall, they are playing for the chance at getting two sold out home games in the first round against the Celtics or Heat. That's about it.

The Pacers still have plenty of time and I'd be surprised if they don't move back past Milwaukee, Charlotte and a few other teams and back into the playoffs. We're just coming to the All-Star break and Indiana has the talent to get the job done ... they just need to find the motivation to do it. Hopefully, the firing of O'Brien will light that fire.
