Orlando Magic Reshape Team

December 19th 2010 00:14
After the rumours began coming in about a possible trade between Washington and Orlando involving Gilbert Arenas, I had my doubts. Why would Orlando want Arenas when they already have their star in Dwight Howard? Why change the whole make up of the team for someone with as much off the court baggage as on the court? The Magic and Wizards have been discussing a deal off and on since last summer. Orlando decided to go with the trade later on in the afternoon sending small forward Rashard Lewis to Washington for Arenas. Only the Magic weren't done for the day. Another trade happened just before the Washington deal was finalized. A blockbuster deal with Phoenix involving six players and a draft pick.

Orlando sent Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, Michael Pietrus and a 2011 first round draft pick to Phoenix for Jason Richardson, Earl Clark and Hedo Turkoglu.

Now the new look Magic team can have a starting lineup of Howard, Richardson, Jameer Nelson, Arenas, and Brandon Bass. This new flexibility will allow the team to bring Turkoglu off the bench.

Orlando has lost five out of six games to fall to 16-9 on the season. The team decides now is the time to begin reshaping the roster to compete better with Miami, Boston, and Chicago.

Lewis will now team up with the rookie sensation John Wall and Kirk Hinrich to attempt to turn around the Wizards who are floundering like usual. Phoenix gets Carter who has had a rough season but send off Turkoglu as he has been a big disapointment. Getting Richardson may be a huge steal for the Magic. He is averaging 19 points a game. Having him team up with Howard could propel the Magic right to the top of the East.

The Magic did great in getting rid of Rashard Lewis who is the 2nd most paid player in the league. Richardson is great, not because of the points per game, but because he is a solid defender; underrated 3-baller; and does an amazing job of attacking the rim. We've all seen his dunks or tested them out on NBA Live. The Magic got a slightly better deal than the Suns did due to the fact that they got J-Rich. I was surprised the Suns didn't get ripped off considering they traded their second best player and only other star besides Nash.
