O.J Mayo suspended for 10 games

January 29th 2011 00:42
As the Memphis Grizzlies continue to improve on the court, and look like a team worthy of an playoff spot, they will have to do so without an key component for a while. Guard O.J. Mayo is suspended from play for ten games, with the suspension beginning today, and running till the Grizzlies game with Philadelphia, February 15th.

Mayo was found to have an illegal supplement found in his body. The exact supplement wasn't made public, and Mayo claims it was an over-the counter purchase. He tested positive for an dehydroepiandrosterone

An draft day trade brought Mayo to Memphis, from Minnesota. The Timberwolves received Kevin Love in return, back in 2008. This season, Mayo has come off the bench for most of the Grizzlies games, starting just 15 times. Mayo averages 12 points per game for Memphis who are mired in a playoff chase. Memphis is 22-24, ninth in the West, just behind Portland who is 25-22.

Mayo earlier on in the season was in the news for an gambling dispute with him and teammate Tony Allen. The two got into a heated argument which included a fight between the two. This brought owner Micheal Heisley to ban gambling.

I have to believe Mayo knew exactly what he was doing, whether it came from an over-the-counter product or not. Any more, these pro athletes are all given lists of what they can and can't use and, if they're not sure, all they need to do is ask a trainer first.

He liked the effects he was getting and didn't think he'd get caught. Hope his miscalculation doesn't end up hurting the Grizzlies too much.

This isn't the first time it has happened. Enter past situations involving Matt Geiger- I used to actually live near that guy- and Rashard Lewis- our favorite overpaid player. Sarcasm intended on Lewis. Anyway, this seems to me like a fair punishment that is consistent- every player caught with a banned substance does 10 games. Mayo's dumb, he had to know what he was taking as well. There were questions raised that he was doing stuff he shouldn't in USC. No surprise here.
