NHL Mayhem

Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux spoke out yesterday about the incredible fighting happening Friday night on Long Island. The fights occurred on the hockey ice, not the octagon or boxing ring.
Fights are a major part of hockey, at all levels. But what transpired on Friday was out of control. 346 minutes of penalty time was allocated to members of both teams, during the New York Islanders 9-3 pasting of the Penguins. Lemieux, was not mad about the terrible loss, instead how the NHL treated those responsible for the fights.
Matt Martin of the Islanders dropped Penguins Max Talbot with several punches. Islander Trevor Gillies gave Penguins center Eric Tangradi a concussion, then while in the penalty box, was seen taunting the Penguin as he got up with a health official. Another Islander, Michael Haley after getting in a tussle with Penguin Max Talbot, went the length of the ice, to go after Pittsburgh goalie Brent Johnson, who was rescued by a Penguin who left the bench, Eric Godard.
All this was because of an earlier fight between the two goalies, Johnson and Islanders goalie Rick DiPetro. Johnson broke several bones in DiPetro's face with one punch. Doing this to a team's goalie is like going after a NFL quarterback. So the Islanders players took it upon themselves last Friday to get revenge for this injury.
I like watching fighting in hockey, but what happened on Friday, was craziness. Guys got suspended for their parts, though not much. Godard got ten games for leaving the bench. Gillies got nine games, and Martin got four. Haley who was in the middle of two battles got nothing. The New York Islanders received a $100,000 dollar fine for not keeping their players in line. All of these should of been worse, as Lemiuex stated. Haley should of gotten something. Fighting in the NHL, after being down for most of the season has skyrocketed this month. Here's to hope that it plummets back down.
