NFL Awards for Week 1
September 14th 2011 01:35
Top Offensive Player: Sure Tom Brady and other quarterbacks in the league had great games, but one stood out. Buffalo quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Bills to a 41-7 win over Kansas City. He threw 4 touchdown passes and had a passer rating of 133, tops in the league for week one.
Top Offensive Team: New England. 622 yards of total offense for the Patriots. Brady passed for 517 of these yards and the rushing attack topped the century mark as well. The Dolphins defense was bad during this game, making things easier for Brady and whoever he threw the ball too.
Top Defensive Player: Terrell Suggs had five tackles and three sacks for the Baltimore Ravens in their 35-7 win over Pittsburgh. Teammate Ed Reed is a close second, after making two interceptions of Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in this game.
Top Defensive Team: Tough category to pick, not many good defenses this week. San Francisco and San Diego both had good defensive performances from their team overall, but the top goes to Baltimore. Shutting down Pittsburgh and getting seven turnovers from Roethlisberger and company deserves the award.
Most Surprising Win: Buffalo and Baltimore each had surprising victories on Sunday. My most surprising win however, was Jacksonville beating Tennessee. After cutting David Garrard, the Jaguars still somehow got Luke McGowan up enough to lead the team in the game. Jacksonville beat Tennessee, 17-14.
Top game next week: Philadelphia at Atlanta. Michael Vick returns to Atlanta for this Sunday night showcase game. Atlanta and Matt Ryan have to get back on track after suffering a bad loss against the Bears. Chicago at New Orleans and San Diego at New England are right behind. These three great games this early in the season will show who has the upper hand in the two conferences.
