New look Blazers set to debut tonight
February 28th 2011 00:59
As the Portland TrailBlazers host the Atlanta Hawks, it will be the debut of the new guy, Gerald Wallace. The Blazers acquired the guard/forward in a deadline day deal with Charlotte. Portland sent center Joel Pryzbilla, forward Dante Cunningham, center Sean Marks and two first-round picks to the Bobcats.
At first, I thought the Blazers gave up too much for Wallace. Now after watching more highlights of the forward, I am glad they got him. Giving up Pryzbilla, and Cunningham was tough but getting someone who is better then both of them combined is great. Pryzbilla, may never again be the same player he once was before his knee surgeries, and everyone in the Blazer organization is tired of injury prone players. So many guys have been hampered by injuries the last two seasons. The 28-year old Wallace has missed some games during his career, but nothing too substantial, a very good sign.
Trading away the two first-round picks was big, though neither choice is a lottery pick. Again making the picks less worthy. Cunningham is beginning to be a decent player. Adding him in the deal was where I felt the Blazers erred. Though, Wallace is currently better then Cunningham ever will be. A great deal for the Blazers and new general manager Rich Cho. A lineup of LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum, and Wallace sounds great.
Wallace was in Portland, Friday night for the teams huge come-from-behind victory over Denver. After the trade, Portland was left with nine active players on the roster, but guys stepped up and played admirably. Guard Brandon Roy once again made a clutch shot, banking in an awkward three-pointer in the waning seconds of regulation to tie the game. Roy went over his 15 allotted minutes as he gets the hang of the game again, with 25. Portland needed every second to defeat the Nuggets, 107-106 in overtime. Now Wallace begins his time as a Blazer versus the Hawks tonight. I can't wait.
